The Olympics began in earnest on Saturday when the first medals of the winter games were awarded in Sochi, Russia.
USA’s Sage Kotsenburg took down the Men’s Slopestyle Snowboarding event to take home the first gold of the games. Sage had a solid first run early in the finals with a judges score of 93.50 and his competitors had a hard time even finishing the very difficult course. In the end Noway’s Staale Sandbech (91.75) and Canada’s Mark Morris (88.75) put in solid runs to join Kotsenburg on the podium.
The Netherlands dominated in the 5000m speed skating competition as Sven Kramer easily won the event, as expected, with his time of 6 minutes 10.76 seconds, a new olympic record. He was able to be joined by his fellow countrymen Jan Blokhuijsen (6:15.71) and Jorrit Bergsma (6:16.66).
In skiing of the cross-country type Norway dominated the day as Marit Bjorgen took home the gold and Heidi Weng the bronze in the Women’s Skiathlon. It was 40-year old Ole Einar Bjoerndalenk who won the Men’s 10km Spring Biathlon event, and set two new records. He is now the oldest ever to win olympic winter gold, and also tied fellow Norwegian Bjorn Daehlie or most overall medals at 12. The veteran, who made his olympic debut 20 years ago in Lilyhammer, will have the opportunity to claim the sole title later on in these games.
The day concluded with the Freestyle Skiing Women’s Moguls event. USA’s Hannah Kearney was expected to win again after wining gold in the 2010 event in Vancouver. She had a rough first round of the finals however, but was able to make it to the Super Final where she put up top marks. She had to settle for bronze however, as some rough turns on her final run opened put he door for the sisters from Canada. Justine Dufour-La-pointe ended up with the win, joined alongside by Chloe Dufour-La-pointe. A third sister Maxime came in twelfth place.
